Winter Scholarship Dinner 2011

The annual winter scholarship dinner took place this past Tuesday evening at the Chapter House.

The brothers gathered in the basement of the Shelter as they have done many times before for dinner and awards.  It was a wonderful sight to see so many alumni and the increased size of the Chapter.  After dinner, several speeches were given to the group.

Dan Earley announced the upcoming house dedication for all brothers to unite around the new Shelter. He also spoke briefly about the beginning of the scholarship fund and the wonderful new house we now call home.

Matt Barnes named the recipients of the 18 undergraduate scholarships and one graduate scholarship.

Howard Krueger gave an emotional testament to the fortitude of the Gamma Xi brotherhood.  Undergraduates and alumni alike were moved as he spoke about how he will never be able to give nearly as much as he has received from the Fraternity.  Additionally, he spoke glowingly about “The Road,” which is the National educational program for continued learning and personal development.

Howard was part of the group that started the Gamma Xi Scholarship Fund, which set out to show appreciation for the benefits received from the Chapter by giving back through scholarships.  These scholarships were, and are, presented to brothers who display leadership qualities, academic ability, and need for financial assistance.  All brothers in attendance were truly blessed to hear Howard speak.

Dr. Santa Ono, Provost of the University, addressed the group about Fraternity life and academics.  He shared an interesting story of how he pledged another Fraternity at age 44 and fulfilled his goal to become Greek after being turned away as an undergraduate.  He spoke highly of the Gamma Xi scholarship program and the value of the Greek community to the University.  Dr. Ono was the first ever guest speaker at the scholarship dinner.

Chapter President Eric Shrider addressed the group and highlighted the Chapter’s improved size and GPA.  We now rank 5th on campus with 64 brothers, and the new Shelter is filled to capacity.
